You are looking at the x-ray of a patient who became the first to have their heart removed and have two pumps placed in the chest to act as an artificial device. Craig A. Lewis of Houston was told he had less than 12 hours to live when doctors at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital decided to try the experimental procedure.
