Preliminary hockey research…help welcome!
So this is random, but has anyone else noticed that Ovechkin often suffers from what I call “diaper pants”? His jersey comes up too far and falls under his giant padded hockey pants. I first noticed it during last year’s 24/7 on the Winter Classic, but I thought that was just because he was wearing mic equipment during the game. But nope, it seems to persist even now.
I shrugged it off to at least one of personal preference, not being well-groomed enough to bother looking presentable, being a really strangely sized person, etc…
But then I noticed the same of Malkin on the Penguins. And randomly remembered that they’ve been Team Russia teammates since they were wee and in the World Junior Championships together. Maybe it’s something they learn on Team Russia??? Don’t bother fixing your jersey; it only hinders your skating? I don’t know!
I’ve been casually trying to spot other instances of “diaper pants” on other players and to see if it happens to them a lot, but it’s tough. I see it happen here or there, especially after tough shifts, but it’s hard to keep track of trends of individual players since I don’t watch much of other teams. I think I need to dedicate some real man-hours in research and watching old games. I’m serious, guys.
Does anyone else have any observations on the matter?
